It's Okay to be Different

A friend of ours let us borrow the book It's Okay to be Different so we could continue our conversation with LL about understanding that everyone is different, and like the book says, it's okay.

On one page, it says, "It's okay to be adopted."

When she came to that page, she started to say, "Oh! I'm adop---....umm I'm not adopted." We explained that she isn't adopted, but she is living with people who aren't her parents, and it's okay. It's okay to be sad, angry, and confused. It's okay to be a foster kid. She said, "I don't live with anyone!" Bry responded with, "Well, you could've fooled me. All of your clothes and toys are upstairs! It sure looks like you live here."

LL's quotes:
- "We used to only have one dinner a week that wasn't pizza. It was pizza, pizza, pizza, beans/corn/chicken leg, pizza, pizza, pizza."
- Bry: "Do you still wanna be a police officer when you grow up?" LL: "Maybe." Bry: "Well, whatever you want to be, you have to go to college to make sure you can get a good job to take care of your family." LL: "Not if I work at Papa John's!"
- "I used to have my own shadow sister." (An invisible friend.)
- Bry: "I have my listening ears on." LL: "You can turn them to medium."

Hula hooping and singing on a sunny, windy evening.

Watching old videos of Lucy.

LL loves the minion we brought her home from Dave and Busters (from a work event.) Thanks for sharing your tickets, Dawn and Deb!!!

"Gabe needs to read the last page of this book so he'll understand that everyone is special, not just him."

About Us:

We began our foster journey in mid-August 2013. We finished our classes in October, had our home study in early January, and we were licensed on February 7, 2014. After seven calls from CPS, we received our first placement, a 7-year-old girl (our Little Lady, or LL for short) on April 3, 2014. Thank you so much for taking the time to read about our journey through the craziness that is foster care. Most importantly, thanks for your prayers, love, and support. We hope to encourage fellow foster/adoptive parents as we document our ups and downs each day.
