Vacation = Goodbye Forever

And.....we're off!

We began our trip around 5:00 this morning when I woke up the sleepy monster(s). Our Little Lady flew out of bed, faster than she ever had before!

Something hit us pretty hard last night while we were packing.

I was telling Bry that LL made a comment about how "it didn't seem like we'd be coming home" when I told her that all of the things we couldn't fit in the car would be there when we returned. She was also very upset when we dropped Lucy off at (doggie) daycare; she said, "I'm just not used to telling Lucy goodbye."

And then it hit us.

How else would you convince a 6 or 7 year old to pack up their belongings in a matter of minutes and get in the car? To leave everything behind and run off to the next place? You would tell them you're going on vacation

When she woke up this morning, I asked her if she had ever been told she was going on "vacation," but never came home. She answered "yes" before I had even finished asking. She told me a story I'm unable to share publicly, but I can just say it was heartbreaking and our predictions were verified...she had never been on a real vacation, it was always used as a code word.

I reassured her that we were really going on vacation and that we would return home to all of her things and her dog. I could hear her trusting us in her reply and it warmed my heart. "I know, I know we're coming back."

I'm not sure how many "vacations" she's had in the past, but I know this is one she'll remember forever (I hope), and it's one that will have a beginning and an end. And she will be reunited with her stuffies, and her dog, and the friends she left back home. And she will learn to trust us even more in these moments.

------------------------------------------------

Our first day of travel included a few random (and some unfortunate) events. First, we happened to meet up with my brother/sis-in-law and my Beanie Baby at a McD's in the middle of nowhere on our way to CO. Crazy!

Next, we were hit with hot tar as we passed a construction site. It covered a good 3x3 feet of Bry's car on the left side. Luckily, there was a car wash close by in Amarillo that had a "tar removal service." (That's actually a thing!) Within about an hour or so, "Falcor" (the name LL gave Bry's Xterra) was cleaned and polished and ready to go.

The last random event hit around 12:30 AM when our Little Lady was throwing up in the bathroom. She didn't have a fever and she felt fine afterwards, so I'm guessing it was just caused by all of the candy and snacks she had on the way up here.

Oops. Parent fail.

LL's quotes:
- "The DVD player has a speaker on it, so now my ears can breathe for a second!"
- "Mr. Brian, can you please stop being so funny? I got in trouble for screaming." (Naturally, this request only made him funnier.)

1. Total Girl t-shirt. 2. Black Beauty necklace. 3. Movie playing on the DVD player (thank you, Nicole!) 4. Liquids nearby. 5. Full tummy from McD's breakfast. I think we're ready for a road trip!

Love the Colorado-bound smile on this girl!

We're getting closer...mountains in NM.

About Us:

We began our foster journey in mid-August 2013. We finished our classes in October, had our home study in early January, and we were licensed on February 7, 2014. After seven calls from CPS, we received our first placement, a 7-year-old girl (our Little Lady, or LL for short) on April 3, 2014. Thank you so much for taking the time to read about our journey through the craziness that is foster care. Most importantly, thanks for your prayers, love, and support. We hope to encourage fellow foster/adoptive parents as we document our ups and downs each day.

'Twas the night before vacation

No, I'm not even going to try to make a cute rendition of the night before Christmas. Don't worry.

All I'll say is...'Twas the night before vacation and all the through house are a bunch of people who aren't going to get enough sleep and who will most likely spend most of the day tomorrow feeling grumpy, cranky, and hungry.

The end.

LL's quotes:
- Me: "What are you going to buy with the money you've been saving?" LL: "I'm saving up for college!"
- "Why do you care so much about germs? You're the princess around here."
- Bry: "Our friends Tina and John are going to be foster parents soon!" LL: "Oh, they're gonna love it! What if they get a bad kid??"

Clearly, she plans to WALK to Colorado. :)

Telling Mr. Brian secrets at Chipotle.

We made a list of chores LL could choose from to make some extra money for souvenirs in CO. She was looking forward to vacuuming more than anything else. Fine. With. Me.

Playing baby dolls...the GI Joe version

I remember "playing baby dolls" being much ummm....quieter...when I was little. I'm pretty sure the extent of me impersonating a baby included drinking out of a bottle, whining, and sleeping.

Let's just say that our Little Lady's version of "playing baby dolls" is much louder (and much more violent!) Fingers were bitten off, sisters were screaming, the older babies were grounded from video games, and so on. It was pretty intense!

In other news, we're getting excited about our trip. Just a warning for our daily readers...we won't be able to post for about a week because of the lack of signal. Just warning you now!

We were supposed to finish a long list of chores today, but instead, we slept in, laid around, and then even took a NAP! It was the best. The chores will have to wait.

I pack (and clean) better under pressure anyway.

LL's quotes:
- "I already knew how to clean my room. Pretty much everything I said I couldn't do I could actually do when I first got here."

The morning started slowly for us today, which I was perfectly fine with. We played "Head's Up" on the iPad and watched the Smurfs movie until we became hungry enough to eat our arms. I cherish the days when we can decide when to get out of bed!

View from my pillow...

After breakfast, we spent about an hour and a half cleaning LL's room. She decided to move all of her "stuffies" downstairs (i.e. the bottom bunk) so she'll have more room to sleep in her bed. She also decided that I don't need to stay in the bottom bunk for 10 minutes any longer after we say our prayers. She's growing up so fast!

This is her waiting patiently for us to get my baby dolls down from the shelf. She's been asking me if she could play with them for months!

She changed Emma into these clothes in case an Arctic cold front comes to Dallas.

She's holding her doll in her right hand. The other four are from when I was little; some of them are more than 30 years old!

"Me and the baby are having a staring contest. She's gonna win."

These are the twins - one is hers, one is mine. We realized they must be from the same company - they look identical!

She earned money today for our Colorado trip by doing a few extra chores. Bry was helping her understand how much money she made and how much she will give during offering tomorrow at church.

Bry and LL inspecting driver's licenses.

My girls. Love them!

Date night!

LL's quotes:
- LL: "I wonder what I'm gonna be in October." Us: "You mean for Halloween?"
- "Oh, do you smell that? Yeah, sorry."
- "I told the church I'll do scoop and poop duty." Two things...1. I can't believe how often we talk about poop in this house with a little girl. 2. Wouldn't it be poop, then scoop?

"They forced me to read with this kid."

We had our first kidless date in 85 days tonight! Dinner and a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse!

30K

We hit 30,000 views on our blog last night. That number is a reminder of the love, support, and prayers all of you have offered on our behalf (and on our Little Lady's behalf) for the last 10 months since we began the foster/adopt journey.

We appreciate your support more than you'll ever know. Thank you!

LL's quotes:
- "Little girls need to build muscles, too!"
- "When little kids ask me questions, I tell them that I'll tell them the answer when they're older."

"Look! I've been playing independently for eight and a half minutes, and I'm even having fun!"

Writing birthday thank you notes! We're a few weeks behind...

Just a simple night at home!

APPROVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HajsjajajushbqgquuababjajaiuavavvshabhxjcufudyxhckxudyxykcustZyxjcuctztxucicyxtxyxucivirZyvivovudyZyxeYhvhv

That was basically what our brains were thinking after we finally received the email that our trip to Colorado with our Little Lady was approved!!!!! :))))))

We had been stressing pretty hard over this for the last few months while we were waiting to hear if the judge had approved the trip. (Yes, when you're a foster parent, you can't just spontaneously get up and go somewhere for vacation. We've been trying to get this one trip approved since April 3rd.)

Around noon today, I read the email and it was all I could do not to scream at the top of my lungs in the middle of my training. We can't wait to introduce LL to the beautiful Rocky Mountains and CO air, go hiking, spend time together on the road trip, and hang out with the family for a whole week! To say we're excited is a complete understatement!

LL's quotes:
- Bry: "You'll have to bring your cowgirl boots with you to Colorado!" LL: "Both of them?"
- "My stomach hurts. It doesn't like anything that doesn't have sugar in it."

I hope we're prepared for the 30 hour round trip drive!

Bry showing LL pictures of the Rockies in his travel book. She was so excited when we told her about it!

Getting more excited...

And even more excited!

We went to dinner to start planning our trip. Emma came with us.

LL asked the hostess for a high chair.

We went to Barnes and Noble after dinner to buy things for the trip. Thank you soooo much for the gift cards, mom and Sally!

Random pic, but I have to share. These are some of LL's texts with her BFF. Hilarious!

We can't WAIT to go back to CO!!!!! Here are some pics I found while reminicsing over last year's trip...

Day 82 with our Little Lady

Our Little Lady saw her mom for the first time in about 11 weeks today.

She was (finally) able to deliver the stack of gifts, notes, drawings, pictures, and cards she's been making for them for the last few months.

She was so excited to tell us about the visit when we got home. I'm curious to see if this visit causes her to regress or if it'll be a good thing for her.

LL's quotes:
- "I'm already smarter than the Smarty Pants cards."
- "Guess who I got to see today? I'll give you a few hints. She has big wrists and she's my mom."

She loves listening to the hamster song on her dad's Father's Day card. We forgot to take this one with us.

Praying before dinner. Don't worry - her dinner wasn't candy; Bry's was finished first, ours was still in the oven. :)

Smoothies for dessert!

Tucking in Emma for bed. She wanted to take the baby doll bed into the top bunk, but we were able to talk her out of it.
