Make believe

Due to a very gracious friend, our Little Lady now has an entire tub full of dress up clothes! It makes my heart so happy to hear her play make believe and dress up by herself. I know this seems like it's just something all little girls do, but before today, LL has really only played like this one or two other times.

Similarly, I assumed she'd really like drawing and arts and crafts, but she's barely shown any interest in anything artsy since she's been here. I realized it was probably due to the fact that she's never had access to paints or art supplies. Now that she has the supplies she needs to express her little creative mind, she seems to really like doing things like this.

While she still struggles with playing independently for more than 16 seconds by herself, I was so happy to see that she played dress up and make believe with her Barbies for almost 45 minutes tonight! It feels amazing to have a few minutes to be able to do the dishes, or laundry, or just sit for a second.

More than that, though, it's great to hear her play with her Barbies and her dolls and make up stories for them. Part of me wishes she could wake up tomorrow in her own bed with her own family and realize that the last 9 and a half weeks were make believe and she'd be back with her mom. But, as you can probably guess, the other part of me prays that we are the ones playing make believe and we will wake up soon and realize she was part of our family all along. And maybe she could even stay...forever.

LL's quotes:
- "Milk can erase my memory." (Drinking milk...) "Who is this dog? Why are my nails painted? Why am I not wearing make-up? Who is this lady? Who's that dog? Where am I? Whose house is this? Why isn't the TV on? Seriously, who is this lady?!?!?"
- (While playing with Barbies, talking to herself) "Guys! Only one sister can drive at a time. Or three, or four, or five." "But, I don't know how to drive." "You're a kid! There's autopilot!"
- (While looking through her new dress up tub) "A leotard?!?! I've been waiting for one of those to come!"

So many choices...

"Heels off!"

"Everybody get in line."

A glimpse into our world...there's only an on or off switch! Sorry, I can only show her feet.

About Us:

We began our foster journey in mid-August 2013. We finished our classes in October, had our home study in early January, and we were licensed on February 7, 2014. After seven calls from CPS, we received our first placement, a 7-year-old girl (our Little Lady, or LL for short) on April 3, 2014. Thank you so much for taking the time to read about our journey through the craziness that is foster care. Most importantly, thanks for your prayers, love, and support. We hope to encourage fellow foster/adoptive parents as we document our ups and downs each day.
