How we do life

While watching cartoons this morning, our Little Lady asked, "How many days have I been here now?"

"122," I replied.

She sighed softly and then said, "I'm just so used to the look of the house."

Exactly 4 months ago today, our little one walked into our house and nothing has been the same ever since.

Nothing was familiar to her. She didn't know where to find a cereal bowl, or extra toilet paper, or clean socks.

She was forced to rewire her brain to acquaint herself with our house.

Were her forks and spoons in the drawer on the right at her parents' house? When she woke up in the middle of the night, was the bathroom on the left

It's the little things like this that I'm sure took up a lot of time and energy in her mind when she first came to us. I wonder how long it took for her to remember which drawer her nightgowns were in, or where to find a cup for water late at night.

Her reflection seems so simple and profound. She's so "used to the look of the house," or used to how we do life.

I often wonder if I would have adapted so quickly to another family's way of doing life at her age. How long would it have taken me to get "used to the look of the house?" I'm guessing something like forever.

Our first night together - 4 months ago today.

LL's quotes:
- "It's hard to make picking up dog poop look fancy." (Don't worry - this is a chore she chooses to do. We pay her well for it, too!)

Bry and LL playing on the iPad.

Checking out Bry's great grandpa's 75 year old microscope. (By the way - that's a baby doll in the back of the truck. Not a small child.)

We had lunch with these two beauties and the rest of the Shackelford crew!

Trying to take a nap on the bottom bunk. This is impossible.

Thanks to Jan, LL has 3 new dresses to add to her wardrobe! Thank you, Jan!!!

That makes the number 23 dresses now!

About Us:

We began our foster journey in mid-August 2013. We finished our classes in October, had our home study in early January, and we were licensed on February 7, 2014. After seven calls from CPS, we received our first placement, a 7-year-old girl (our Little Lady, or LL for short) on April 3, 2014. Thank you so much for taking the time to read about our journey through the craziness that is foster care. Most importantly, thanks for your prayers, love, and support. We hope to encourage fellow foster/adoptive parents as we document our ups and downs each day.
